To assess the risk of explosive remnants of war being present, a historical preliminary investigation is carried out. Based on the findings, a decision is made as to whether further investigation is required.

The preliminary investigation determines whether military operations took place within the area, which may have left explosive remnants of war in the ground. A wide range of information is consulted to reach this conclusion. This includes aerial photographs from the Second World War, national and international archives, literature and old press releases. The investigation is carried out in accordance with the current Certification Scheme for Preliminary Investigation and Risk Analysis of Explosive Remnants of War (CS-VROO).

Risk Assessment

If the preliminary investigation indicates that there is an increased risk of explosive remnants of war being present, action must be taken!

The risk analysis identifies the specific risks that may arise during the execution of the planned works. This analysis is carried out on the basis of the preliminary investigation, post-war developments in the area and (contra)indications in relation to the proposed works. Ultimately, this results in site-specific advice regarding control measures to ensure the works can be carried out safely.
